Arts and Crafts Oak Dining Chair Chairs are on of the most common pieces of furniture, and dining chairs are some of the most beautiful as for as showing off a woodworker’s skill. A dining room chair like this is a great, practical project for any woodworker. It uses common oak, has a straightforward design, and with the easy-to-use plans available below, you can breeze through this with no problem. Although you can just make a single chair for your bedroom, study or den, this chair is ultimately designed to be made in sets. You will want to plan on making at least 4 chairs to make a nice dining room set, but if you have a larger family, you can make six or eight chairs. The plans for this chair call for 4/4 and 8/4 quartersawn white oak. If you do not have your own planer, find a friend or a woodworking club that will let you borrow theirs. Otherwise, you’ll have to find a wood supplier who can surface the boards to thicknesses of 13/16 in. and 1-3/4 in.

Chair making can be a challenging prospect for an inexperienced woodworker. Fortunately, this simple, yet elegant Arts and Crafts style chair makes for a great project if you’ve never made a chair before. Mortise-and-tenon joinery simplifies the construction process so you don’t need any advanced joinery techniques.

Here is a tip if you are making multiple chairs: make them all simultaneously. Beginning woodworkers sometimes think it’s better to make one chair first and see how it goes. The problem with that plan is that you have a lot of machine setup with chair making, so it will be hard to have chairs that are identical and will waste a lot of time. If you do your machine setup once, then cut all the pieces for each chair using that setup, making a set of chairs doesn’t take much longer than making just making one chair. Plus, they will all be identical.

Planning is key when making chairs. Know how many chairs you want to make and get the wood you need right away. A good woodworker is a good planner.
