Chair making can be a challenging prospect for an inexperienced woodworker. Fortunately, this simple, yet elegant Arts and Crafts style chair makes for a great project if you’ve never made a chair before. Mortise-and-tenon joinery simplifies the construction process so you don’t need any advanced joinery techniques.
Here is a tip if you are making multiple chairs: make them all simultaneously. Beginning woodworkers sometimes think it’s better to make one chair first and see how it goes. The problem with that plan is that you have a lot of machine setup with chair making, so it will be hard to have chairs that are identical and will waste a lot of time. If you do your machine setup once, then cut all the pieces for each chair using that setup, making a set of chairs doesn’t take much longer than making just making one chair. Plus, they will all be identical.
Planning is key when making chairs. Know how many chairs you want to make and get the wood you need right away. A good woodworker is a good planner.
The woodworking plans for this oak dining chair project are detailed and in color. The plans include a full materials list so you can price the project with different wood suppliers or with different types of wood. These Arts and Crafts dining chairs would also look great in cherry wood or maple. If you are planning to make the matching oak dining table, buy all your wood at the same time and from the same source.
